Marc Vanrunxt

As a dancer and choreographer, Marc Vanrunxt has occupied a unique position in the Flemish world of dance for over 30 years. He explores the boundaries of dance as a medium and choreography as a language by taking into account the body’s possibilities. In his work he tries to re-define terms like time, space, energy and presence. Vanrunxt’s work centres around contradictions like visible/invisible and tangible/elusive. His artistic vocabulary is rooted in the punk and do-it-yourself movements, in minimalism and abstract expressionism.

The attempt to distil that composition into a dance that wants to step out of the world and into the image is counterbalanced by a sharp awareness of the material that surrounds and directs the dance. The presence and longing of the spectator entice the choreographer to take a furtive glance over the edge of the strictly organised space. Seriousness, control and composure overlap with winks, chaos and quotes.
